The Thematic Symposium on “Global Public Health Security and Health Promotion” was Held

On November 26th, 2020, the Thematic Symposium on “Global Public Health Security and Health Promotion”, co-hosted by Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR), the Health Sub-Alliance of the University Alliance (HAS-UASR), and Xi’an Jiaotong University Global Health Institute (GHI) was held successfully.

Youfa Wang, leading scholar in XJTU, dean of GHI, professor in Public Health Institute, and Randa M. Mostafa, vice president of Benha University, Egypt, professor of clinical physiology in BU-FAIMER, were the co-chairs of the symposium. The symposium focused on two topics, “Prevention and treatment of COVID-19 pandemic” and “Disease burden and health promotion”.

Eight experts, from both home and abroad, including the Politecnico di Milano University, Benha University, Egypt; the Chinese University of Hong Kong, China; Zhengzhou University, China; Medical College of Wisconsin, USA; The University of Texas at Austin, USA; Mahidol University, Thailand; and XJTU, China, made reports from aspects of the prediction of the prevalence of COVID-19, the cross-cutting links with non-communicable diseases and the relevant countermeasures.

First, Giacomo Grasselli, professor of Anesthesiology, at Politecnico di Milano University, gave a speech of “COVID-19: the Intensive Care Unit response in Lombardy” and presented the prevalence of COVID-19 in Italy and the countermeasures that Intensive Care Unit made. Reda M. Elbadawy, Professor at the department of Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and Molysmology of Benha University, Egypt, gave a report of “COVID-19 Burden & Health Promotion”. Kwok Kin On, Assistant Professor in The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China, illustrated the future of COVID-19 from the perspective of an epidemiologist. Prof. Haiyan YANG at the College of Public Health of Zhengzhou University, China, showed the morbidity rate of the underlying disease of COVID-19.

Associate Professor, Alice F. Yan, at Medical College of Wisconsin, USA delivered a speech with the topic of ”COVID-19 Pandemic Prevention and Control: people’s knowledge, attitude and health behaviors during the COVID-19 in China”. Prof. Bo XIE at the University of Texas at Austin, USA, gave a report on “Aging during COVID-19: eHealth Challenges and Opportunities”. Prof. Sauwakon Ratanawijitrasin, Chair, of the Department of Society and Health, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Mahidol University, Thailand, introduced the comparison among governments’ effective measures against the pandemic. Prof. Lei Zhang, School of Public Health and Director, China-Australia Joint Research center for Infectious Diseases at XJTU reported on “Prevalence Trend of COVID-19 in the United States: Model Prediction Based on Potential Vaccine Effectiveness, Social Isolation and Mask Use”.

This webinar created a platform for global experts to communicate with each other and jointly promoted the work for epidemic research, prevention, and control. It provided an opportunity for interdisciplinary cooperation worldwide. This webinar was highly praised by the participating scholars, who believed that the seminar had a positive impact on promoting the prevention and control of COVID-19 and the health and well-being of mankind.
